Illegal Detention: CSOs Calls Out IGP Alkali for Ordering the Detention of a Man for Over 3 Months

A coalition of civil society groups under the aegis of Civil Society Organizations in Defence of Justice have petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba , to order the release of Mr Adeshina Adelani Adekanmbi who have been held incommunicado for the past 3 months over allegation of conspiracy.

The Coalition also asked the IGP to cautioned his men , especially SP Usman, ASP Bala Abdullahi and inspector Rueben Noah that have continue to demand bribe of 5million naira to grant bail to the accused.

Convener of the Coalition, Comrade Sam Adah gave the charge on Friday in Abuja at a media interface.

He cited the plight of the accused in the police custody as most pathetic.

He said; “We have it on record that on 16th Nov , 2021 the accused was picked up over an allegation sorrounding a business transaction of Bearue De Change involving one Alh. Mohammed Galadima and many others .

“We Know the Nigeria Police Force have the mandate to investigate were an allegation is made, but this must be seen to be done according to the rule of law”.

“The Continue detention of the accused for over 3 months and the refusal to allow him access to food , family members and lawyer is not just barbaric but totally condemnable”.

“While in the course of the investigation , ASP Bala Abdullahi and Inspector Rueben Noah collected 3.7million in total from the accused and also collected #450,000 from the wife of the accused to help transport the husband from lagos to Abuja for further investigation”.

“This Police officers we were relaibly informed continue to beat and manhandle the accused person , one would wonder if that is also in the mandate of the Nigeria Police Force”.

“We demand the immediate release of the accused person or immediate arraignment in court.”

“We also demand the IGP to order a review of the case and ensure that Justice is done and also ensure forthwith that no harm befalls the accused.
